COPD

Strengthen your breathing!

Lung disease COPD
COPD is a chronic lung disease. It is characterized by shortness of breath and coughing. Physiotherapy plays an important role in slowing down the disease process and reducing your symptoms. You will be taught a proper, efficient way to breathe where it is important that you ventilate the entire lung. You will also learn relaxation methods that you may use when you are short of breath.

ACBT technique
The ACBT technique helps you to efficiently cough up any mucus in the lungs/bronchi. In addition, it is very important that you maintain your fitness level and strengthen your (assistive) breathing muscles. COPD is irreversible, but there is still plenty that can be done to improve your quality of life!

Causes of COPD
In 90% of all cases, smoking is the cause of COPD. The most important thing is therefore to stop smoking, if you have not already done so.

What does COPD stand for?
COPD is an abbreviation of the English term ‘Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease’, which means chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is a generic term for the lung diseases chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These conditions used to fall under the collective name CARA together with asthma, but this term is no longer used officially. There are approximately 320,000 COPD patients in the Netherlands.

Reimbursement
The basic insurance reimburses physiotherapy when a chronic disorder is involved. Are you 18 years of age or older? Then the costs will be reimbursed from the basic insurance from the 21st treatment. The first 20 treatments are covered by the supplementary insurance, provided you have taken out this insurance with your health insurer. All treatments will be reimbursed for young people up to the age of 18.
