Privacy regulations
In order to carry out your treatment as well as possible, your physical therapist keeps a record of your medical and personal data. The Dutch Personal Data Protection Act (Wbp) applies to this registration. This law contains rules regarding the purpose of the registration, the nature of the data that are registered, the management of the data, the persons who have access to that data and the patient’s right to inspection. All these matters are laid down in regulations.
Regulations
Of course, your physical therapist will handle your information with care: therefore, in addition to the above-mentioned Personal Data Protection Act (Wpb), a number of rules have been recorded in a privacy regulation:
- In addition to the physical therapist who treats you, a limited number of other persons have access to the data included in the registration. These include the observers, other physical therapists in the practice, any interns and administrative staff. All these persons have a duty of confidentiality.
- You have the right to see the data recorded about you. If you believe that data is incorrectly recorded, you can request the physical therapist in charge to change it.
- Only data that relates to the treatment will be stored in the medical file.
- In order to further develop physical therapy and keep it at a high level, scientific research has to be conducted. For this purpose it is necessary that statistics are compiled. If your data is used for this purpose, it will not be personally traceable (anonymous) in order to guarantee your privacy.
- If you object to your data being used for (anonymous) scientific research, you can let your physical therapist know.
- If it is important for the research that data can be traced back to you personally, they will only be provided (to the researcher) when you have given written permission.
- Data of clients will not be provided to third parties, including close relatives. Data will only be released after the client has given permission. Data will also not be disclosed after death.
- After the client has been treated, the data will be archived for 10 years in such a way that only a limited group of people can view this data.
Treatment
For the handling and treatment of the client there are a number of guidelines that the practice uses:
- The procedure for treatment is explained prior to treatment. Here we indicate what we are going to do, which actions will be performed. If you have any objections to this, would you please indicate this immediately?
- If you object to certain actions, for example because of your religious beliefs, please make this known during the first appointment, so that the physiotherapist can judge whether he/she can proceed with treatment.
- If you object to being treated by a physical therapist of a different gender, please indicate this before the first consultation.
- Treatment generally takes place in a separate room, where only the physical therapist and client are present. Only in the case of group therapy will several people be present in the same room.
- If third parties (e.g. a trainee) are present during the treatment, we will ask you for permission in advance.
- The physiotherapist and any accompanying persons must behave respectfully towards you and refrain from informality that is not desirable.
- If undesirable situations arise, we will consult with another physical therapist or terminate treatment.
- Discussed topics remain confidential and will not be discussed with third parties.
